Safety Advocacy, Philanthropy and Community Service

Ragland & Jones, LLP is committed to philanthropy, safety advocacy, and serving the needs of the community both in and outside of Atlanta where the firm has its offices. Ragland & Jones, LLP believes strongly that it must be an advocate for conduct by individuals, corporations and government which is more safe, fair and respectful of the rights of individuals, and that it should come to the aid of those with needs and deserving of help. Indeed, a commitment to advocacy, philanthropy and community service is a stated part of the firm’s established Mission Statement.

Unfortunately, there are many unmet needs in Georgia and elsewhere, and there are countless causes and organizations which Ragland & Jones, LLP would like to support. But, of course, the firm’s resources and ability to participate in charitable and community service opportunities are not unlimited. Ragland & Jones, LLP is proud of the fact that it supports the following organizations and has served the community in the following ways:

MADD Georgia

Ragland & Jones, LLP has always had an especially strong commitment to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). Between 1991 and 1998, Mr. Ragland served as “Legal Advisor” to MADD Georgia and was a member of its Board of Directors. Since 2002, Mr. Ragland has served as a member of the MADD Georgia State Advisory Council. Mr. Ragland has participated in numerous workshops for MADD “victim advocates” in Georgia and other states. He has given lectures and led training seminars on dram shop liability and civil law claims against drunk drivers to MADD chapters in Georgia, Florida, Texas, Washington, New Mexico and Arizona.

As a firm, Ragland & Jones, LLP is dedicated to helping MADD achieve its mission to prevent drunk driving and serve the victims of this crime. In 2006 and 2007, Ragland & Jones, LLP was a corporate sponsor of MADD Georgia’s “Strides for Change” fundraising campaign held at the Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta.  Also, in 2008, Ragland and Jones, LLP was a corporate sponsor of MADD’s “Walk Like MADD” campaign at the Atlanta Zoo. The firm’s corporate sponsorship contribution during years 2006 – 2008 totaled $10,000. In addition, in years 2007 and 2008, Ragland & Jones, LLP undertook considerable effort to raise more than $11,000 in additional funds from other trial lawyers in Georgia. Two years in a row, Ragland & Jones, LLP was given the “Top Fundraiser” award for its achievement in contributing and raising more money than any other participant in the 2007 “Strides for Change” walk and the 2008 “Walk Like MADD” walk.

Georgia Mock Trial Competition

Attorneys Daniel Ragland and Evan Jones have served as coaches for local high schools participating in the Georgia Mock Trial Competition. In 2004, 2005 and 2008, Mr. Ragland served as a volunteer lawyer coach for the mock trial team at the Wesleyan School located in Norcross, Georgia. In 2008, Evan Jones served as a volunteer lawyer coach for the mock trial team at Northview High School located in Duluth, Georgia.

The Georgia Mock Trial Competition helps high school students gain an understanding of the legal system by providing opportunities for teams of high school students to compete in “mock trials” where the participating students assume the roles of lawyers and witnesses in a hypothetical court case. The Georgia Mock Trial Competition is sponsored and conducted by the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the State Bar of Georgia. Held every winter, the Georgia Mock Trial Competition is designed to help participating students improve their proficiency in such basic skills as listening, speaking, reading, and reasoning. Mock trials help students gain a basic understanding of the legal process through which our society chooses to resolve many of its disputes. And, while obtaining this knowledge, high school students develop useful questioning, critical thinking, and oral advocacy skills, as well as significant insight into the area of law in question.
